Softball Splits Doubleheader at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Saint Joseph's softball team split its doubleheader at George Washington on Saturday as the Hawks took the opener, 2-1, but fell in game two, 4-0.

In the opener, SJU starter Ashley Ventura allowed a solo home run to the Colonials' in the bottom of the first, but dominated from there, keeping GW hitless over the final six innings as her teammates would answer.

Down 1-0 in the sixth, senior Cyndi Wilson singled home classmate Sarah Yoos to tie the game at 1-1.

The Hawks (19-23-1, 7-11-1 Atlantic 10) would go ahead in the seventh as Raelynn Genovese doubled to start the inning and came around to score on an RBI sing le by Yoos.

Ventura made the lead stand, retiring GW in order in the bottom of the game to close out the victory. Ventura improved to 10-7 on the year with the win as she went the complete game allowing just the one hit, while striking out eight.

In game two, George Washington scored twice in the first and the third to open a 4-0 lead.

Saint Joseph's had chances to get momentum, but the Colonials stopped them each time to hold on for the win.

Sophomore Madison Clarke fell to 7-8 on the year after going 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run and striking out five.

The two teams cap their series on Sunday with a game at noon.
