Box Score PHILADELPHIA - The Hawks erased an early two-goal deficit by tearing off seven straight goals over the span of 28:21 as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad downed Richmond, 11-7, in Atlantic 10 action on Friday evening on Sweeney Field. With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the A-10, while Richmond falls to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Junior midfielder Maggie Egan recorded six points (3g, 3a) while freshman midfielder Rebecca Lane (3g, 1a) and junior attacker Nora McCallion (3g) added hat tricks.
"I'm really proud of our team today," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the game. "We came out with a great overall team win. "Defensively, we really played as a unit . . . Offensively, we were able to finish our shots today and capitalize off of our offenses . . . This was a great team win today."
Senior defender Caroline Hagan matched a game-best four ground balls and matched a team-best three caused turnovers. Hagan's first caused turnover of the game, with 3:20 to play in the first half, broke SJU's all-time program record, held by Alli MacDonald '12 (67), for career caused turnovers.
"It's a really exciting accomplishment, but I couldn't have done it without a great defensive unit all four years," said Hagan following the game. "All four years I've been here, we've been so close as a defensive unit, working together to achieve our goals."
Trailing 2-0 early on, Lane scored the Hawks' first goal of the day at the 18:49 mark to start SJU's seven-goal run. Egan then scored just over two minutes later to tie the game, 2-2, with 16:31 to play in the first.
Lane (2:39) and McCallion (1:14) put away another pair of goals to put the Hawks ahead, 4-2, entering the halftime break.
Egan factored into SJU's final three goals of the run, assisting on McCallion's goal (25:44) to start the second half and scoring a pair of unassisted scores (22:14, 20:28) to close out the seven-goal run.
Richmond scored a pair (20:11, 17:23) to close the Spiders' deficit to three goals, 7-4, but Lane tallied her third of the day (14:09) to extend SJU's lead back out to four goals.
The Spiders scored just 1:05 later on an unassisted score from Brooke Wilson to inch to back within three, but senior midfielder Mallory Grey (8:21, assisted by Lane), junior attacker Sarah Smith (7:50, assisted by Egan), and McCallion (4:43, assisted by Smith) strung together a trio of consecutive goals to give the Hawks an 11-5 lead heading into the final 4:43.
Richmond would add another pair of goals in the final 3:40, but the Hawks would hold on as the 11-7 score would stand as time expired.
For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 26-18 advantage in shots and earned 12 of the game's 20 draw controls. Richmond won the ground ball battle, 22-21.
Junior defender Megan Tracy finished the day with a game-high three draw controls, while Egan added three ground balls and matched a team-best three caused turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (3-8, 2-1 A-10) made six saves, including five in the first half, in the full 60:00.
Saint Joseph's returns to Atlantic 10 action at La Salle this Sunday, April 10. Opening draw is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
GAME NOTES: The win marks the second in the series history for the Hawks, who improve to 2-15 all-time agianst the Spiders... The last time SJU defeated Richmond was in the semifinals of the 2009 A-10 Championships... The win snapped a six-game series winning streak for Richmond... Richmond's Mia Castagnero entered the game leading the Atlantic 10 in goals per game, scoring 3.33 per contest; the Hawks held Castagnero to two goals... SJU has won back-to-back games for the first time this season and back-to-back conference games for the first time since April 7 and April 12 of 2013.
