PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team put up a strong fight at #22 Rutgers on Friday, but a late second half goal lifted the Scarlet Knights past the Hawks, 1-0.
Behind three saves from rookie goalkeeper Cameron Perrott, Saint Joseph's went into halftime tied at 0-0 with nationally-ranked Rutgers .
After nearly 30 more minutes of deadlock to start the second stanza, the Scarlet Knights broke the tie in the 75th minute as Amanda Visco scored off a free kick at the front of SJU's net to make it 1-0.
Perrott and the Hawks' defense would hold Rutgers off the board from there, giving themselves a chance to tie the game.
Unfortunately for SJU, the Scarlet Knights thwarted a final Hawk attack as SJU's final scoring chance off the foot of senior Emily Gingrich in the 89th minute was saved.
For the game, Rutgers (2-0-1) finished with with a 19-8 edge in shots and 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Individually, Perrott had a game-high eight saves for SJU, while sophomore forward Dakota Mills registered a team-high four shots.
Saint Joseph's (1-1-0) returns to action on Sunday at Delaware at 3 p.m.
