Softball Tripped Up At Monmouth, 5-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's softball team was held to just two hits as the Hawks saw their win streak snapped at Monmouth, 5-0, on Wednesday.

Monmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead on SJU thanks to a fielding error with two outs.

The Hawks (8-16) threatened in the third with runners at second and third and only one out. However, Monmouth worked out of the jam to keep Saint Joseph's off the board.

A pair of RBI singles in both the fourth and fifth innings pushed Monmouth's lead to 5-0.

From there, the host Hawks allowed just two base runners over the final two innings to seal the game.

Individually, senior Kaylyn Zierke and freshman Molly Kapala accounted for both SJU hits on the day.

In the circle, senior Niki Carillo allowed two runs over two innings and fell to 0-1 on the year with the loss. Junior Madison Clarke picked up a team-best three strikeouts in two innings of shutout relief.

The Hawks are back in action with a three-game series at Fordham starting this Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.
