BRONX, N.Y. - Freshman Molly Kapala delivered a two-run home run in the top of the eighth, and sophomore Ashley Ventura tossed a complete-game shutout to help the Saint Joseph's softball team top Fordham, 2-0, in eight innings on Saturday at Bahoshy Field.
After seven scoreless innings, sophomore Taryn Grober put a runner in scoring position for the Hawks with a one-out double in the top of the eighth. Kapala followed with a two-run home run to left center to give Saint Joseph's a 2-0 edge.
The two runs would be all Ventura and the Hawks' defense would need as they retired the Rams in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win and move to 9-16 overall and 3-1 in the A-10.
Ventura, who improved to 6-6 on the year in the win, threw eight scoreless innings and scattered three hits to go with five strike outs.
At the plate, Kapala acollected her third home run of the season and went 1-for-3, while classmate Sarah Ostaszewski went 2-for-4.
The Hawks (9-16, 3-1 A-10) and Rams cap their three-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
