Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Tied 5-5 midway through the first half, the Minutewomen used an 8-1 run to close the first and scored four of the first five goals of the second to pull away for good as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped, 24-14, at Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 action at Garber Field on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-5 (1-1 A-10) while the Minutewomen improve to 7-3 (2-0 A-10).
Freshman midfielder Penny Green recorded a team-best three goals on the day for her first collegiate hat trick. Senior attacker Sarah Smith added three points on one goal and two assists while junior midfielder Aly Gormley added two goals and a helper.
Green opened the game's scoring less than a minute in (29:34) before UMass' Hannah Burnett scored twice within 13 seconds (27:15, 27:02) to give the Minutewomen their first lead of the day.
Sophomore midfielder Ally Beck equalized the score on a dish from junior midfielder Dana Garbinski (25:37) before UMass went on a three-goal run to pull back ahead, 5-2, at the 22:53 mark.
However, the Hawks clawed back on a pair of unassisted scores from freshman attacker Hope Anhut (16:20) and freshman midfielder Bridget Cerciello (14:36), and a free position goal from sophomore attacker Francesca Donato (13:49) to once again even up the scoring.
From there, UMass closed the half on an 8-1 run to take a 13-6 advantage into the halftime break.
Senior attacker Nora McCallion opened the second half with her first goal of the game at the 28:42 mark to cut the Hawks' deficit to six goals, 13-7, but UMass tore off on its third four-goal run of the game to jump out to a 17-7 lead with 25:04 to play.
The Hawks battled and outscored the Minutewomen 5-2 over the next 16:29, as McCallion (23:38), Anhut (21:47), freshman midfielder Julia Pash (14:48), Smith (10:50), and Gormley (8:35) combined to pull the Hawks to within seven, 19-12.
From that point, UMass scored three in a row (7:51, 6:15, 5:01) and after another pair from Green (3:32) and Gormley (1:40), added two more in the final 1:09 to close the game with the 10-goal advantage.
For the game, UMass held advantages in shots (50-25), including a 29-11 first half, draw controls (26-14), and ground balls (17-16). The Minutewomen also converted on four of seven free position shots, while the Hawks only earned one on the day.
Garbinski boasted a game-high five ground balls while Anhut added four draw controls to her two-goal day.
Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (4-4, 1-1 A-10) made 10 saves in the full 60:00.
UMass' Burnett scored eight times, while Hannah Murphy came away with 14 draw controls.
Saint Joseph's returns to action at St. Bonaventure next Friday, April 7. Start time in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
