Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – Senior attacker Nora McCallion scored seven goals and sophomore midfielder Rebecca Lane added a hat trick and four assists as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad came from behind to knock off conference power George Mason, 20-10, in Atlantic 10 road action at George Mason Stadium on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 9-5 overall (5-1 A-10) and give the Patriots (10-5, 6-1 A-10) their first conference loss of the season. SJU extends its winning streak to four games and has won seven of the last eight and snapped George Mason's winning streak at six games.
McCallion and Lane combined for 14 points while sophomore attacker Francesca Donato (2g, 3a), junior midfielder Aly Gormley (3g), and sophomore midfielder Hayley Sabol (2g, 1a) also propelled SJU's offense.
Paced by a trio of free position scores and a dominant performance in draw controls, George Mason jumped out to a 7-3 lead by the 15:58 mark of the first half.
George Mason's seventh score, by Jordan Sdanowich, would be the Patriots' last for the next 25:21. During that time, the Hawks exploded for nine goals to close out the first and open the second half and to bring an 12-7 lead into the final 22:32.
Donato (11:18) and McCallion (8:52) kicked off the run, with both goals assisted by sophomore midfielder Ally Beck, before Lane scored (8:38) and assisted on Gormley's second of the day (7:08). McCallion then caught George Mason goalkeeper Melissa Semkiw out of position and fired off SJU's eighth goal of the game on a feed from freshman midfielder Bridget Cerciello to give the Hawks an 8-7 lead (4:27) to take into the halftime break.
The Hawks then scored the first four goals of the second half as Gormley (27:20) and Cerciello (26:51) put together a pair of free position scores and McCallion fired off her second and third of the day on helpers from Sabol (23:47) and Lane (22:43).
George Mason broke up its scoring drought as Hailey Johnson scored an unassisted goal at the 20:37 mark, but the Hawks were relentless as they scored the game's next five goals to extend their lead by nine, 17-8, entering the final 12:04. Donato had a hand in four of those five scores as she kicked off the run with an unassisted goal (19:33) and assisted on Sabol's EMO goal (16:20), McCallion's fourth of the day (14:23) and Lane's third of the game (12:04).
The Patriots put together back-to-back scores (11:20, 6:11) to inch back to within seven, 17-10, but the Sabol (4:48), McCallion (3:11), and graduate student midfielder Mallory Grey (1:00) combined for the final three goals of the game.
For the game, the Hawks owned a 40-29 advantage in shots and 21-20 edge in ground balls while George Mason earned 16 of the game's 26 draw controls, dominating the first 15:00 of the first half.
Junior defender Kristen Kelbon recorded three ground balls and a team-high two caused turnovers while Gormley (4gb, 1ct) and freshman midfielder Julia Pash (3gb, 1ct) combined for seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Lane (4) and Donato (3) combined for seven of the Hawks' 12 draw controls.
SJU converted on 3-of-6 eight meter attempts and held the Patriots to four free position scores in nine attempts.
Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (8-4, 5-1 A-10) made 13 saves - including nine in the second half - in the full-game effort.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday, April 23 at Richmond (10-5, 5-2 A-10). Start time at Robins Stadium is slated for 1:00 p.m. The Spiders enter Sunday's game coming off of a 15-1 win over St. Bonaventure on this afternoon.
