Late Richmond Goals Down Women's Lacrosse, 12-11

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – The Spiders dominated in draw controls late to score three goals in the final 3:12 as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad dropped a one-goal heartbreaker to Richmond, 12-11, in Atlantic 10 action at Robins Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 9-6 (5-2 A-10) while the Spiders improve to 11-5 (6-2 A-10).

Sophomore midfielder Hayley Sabol matched a career-high four points with three goals and an assist while sophomore attacker Francesca Donato and freshman midfielder Bridget Cerciello added two goals apiece off the bench. Graduate student midfielder Mallory Grey had a solid line with three points on one goal and two assists, four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls while junior defender Kristen Kelbon and sophomore midfielder Ally Beck combined for seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers.

Tied 9-9 heading into the final 9:16, Saint Joseph's junior midfiedler Aly Gormley put away her 17th goal of the season and Kelbon added her first score of the year less than four minutes later to give the Hawks a two-goal advantage, 11-9, with 5:29 remaining in regulation.

Richmond won the ensuing draw control, but senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler made the save on a Melissa Teel shot attempt with 4:07 to play to maintain the two-goal lead. However, an SJU turnover would give the ball back to the Spiders, and Sam Geiersbach put one into the back of the net at the 3:12 mark as Richmond inched back to within one.

The Spiders won the next draw control and fired off two quick shots on net; Deibler made the first save, but Richmond's Kim Egizi put away the equalizer with 2:16 to play.

The Hawks were relentless in the final 2:10. Richmond won the draw and immediately called a timeout, but just seven seconds out of that timeout, Kelbon caused her third turnover of the game and scooped up her fourth ground ball of the day to kick off a successful SJU clear attempt.

Sophomore midfielder Rebecca Lane saw a good look on goal, but Richmond netminder Megan Gianforte came up with her 10th save of the game to keep the score even entering the final 1:29.

SJU's defense stood tall as the back line blocked Richmond's first of two shot attempts with 41 ticks to go and Deibler made a save from a close shot off of the left wing with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.

Off of that save, Richmond's Egizi got the ground ball, and Richmond took another timeout. Four seconds out of that timeout, Egzi found Kathleen Berkery (0:18) for what would stand as the eventual game-winning goal, as Richmond would follow up with the game's final draw control possession.

For the game, Richmond earned a 34-30 advantage in shots by outshooting Saint Joseph's by two in each half, while the Hawks earned a slight 18-17 edge in ground balls. The difference was in draw controls, where Richmond earned 17 of the game's 25, including 10 of 13 in the second half.

Saint Joseph's was a perfect 3-for-3 in free position attempts and held Richmond to just 1-for-6 shooting from the eight meter on the day.

Tied 4-4 heading into the final 5:34 of the first half, Cerciello, Sabol (3:08), and Donato (1:31) combined for three consecutive goals to put the Hawks up by three, 7-4, heading into the halftime break.

Richmond would go on to score four of the first five goals of the second half to tie it up, 8-8, with 14:33 to play, but Donato took a feed from Grey (12:12) to put the Hawks back up by one.

The Spiders responded with an unassisted goal less than a minute later to take an even 9-9 playing field into the final 11:24.

Deibler (8-5, 5-2 A-10) made nine saves in the full-game effort.

Saint Joseph's returns to action at St. Bonaventure (3-12, 1-6 A-10) this Wednesday, April 26. Start time at the Marra Athletics Field Complex in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. is slated for 2:00 p.m. Of note, this is a make-up game that had originally been scheduled for April 7 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Hawks will then close the regular season at home this Saturday, April 29 against George Washington at 1:00 p.m.
