BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Paced by sophomore midfielder Rebecca Lane's eight points and freshman midfielder Julia Pash's season-high six goals, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad cruised by St. Bonaventure, 22-14, in Atlantic 10 action at the Marra Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks, who have won five of their last six, improve to 10-6 overall (6-2 A-10) while the Bonnies fall to 3-13 (1-7 A-10).
With their 10th victory of the season, the Hawks match the program record for single-season wins, tying the 2009 squad. SJU's season-high 22 goals ranks second in program history and the most in a single game since SJU put up 26 against Mercyhurst on March 4, 1997.
The Hawks scored their 22 goals on 55 shots, which breaks the previous program record for single-game shots (51), recorded against St. Bonaventure on April 16, 2000.
Lane led all scorers with a game-high eight points on four goals and a game-high four assists, while Pash led SJU with a dazzling six-goal performance off the bench. Senior attacker Nora McCallion and graduate student midfielder Mallory Grey combined for six goals as the co-captains each recorded hat tricks.
Neither team led by more than three goals entering the second half, and St. Bonaventure's Taylor Fallon brought the Bonnies to within two, 10-8, with 28:29 to play in regulation.
From that point, the Hawks scored nine of the next 11 goals of the game to take a 19-10 advantage into the final 12:56.
Lane kicked off the run with back-to-back scores (27:33, 25:44) while Grey (22:15, 19:59) and Pash (21:19) combined for SJU's next trio of unassisted goals. Sophomore midfielder Ally Beck (17:30), Grey (16:41), sophomore midfielder Hayley Sabol (15:46), and junior midfielder Aly Gormley (12:56) scored four in a row to push the Hawk's lead out by nine.
The Bonnies chipped away to score three of the next four to close the deficit to seven, 20-13, entering the final 5:32 of regulation, but McCallion netted her third of the day on a free position shot (4:40) and Pash tucked away her season-high sixth goal of the game just 41 seconds later to give the Hawks a 22-13 advantage with 3:59 to go.
SBU's Kyra O'Gorman scored with 19 ticks on the scoreboard to bring the Bonnies to 14.
For the game, Saint Joseph's put up 55 shots - 26 in the first half and 29 in the second half - and held St. Bonaventure to just 25 for the game. The Bonnies earned a 29-26 edge in ground balls while the Hawks dominated in the circle, winning 28 of the game's 35 total draw controls.
In addition to scoring a goal in the second half, Beck matched a game-high seven draw controls, tallied a game-high three caused turnovers, and added two ground balls, while senior midfielder Maggie Egan matched Beck's game-high seven draw controls and scooped up a team-high four ground balls off the bench.
Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (9-5, 6-2 A-10) made six saves in the full 60:00.
Saint Joseph's returns home to host George Washington (3-12, 2-6 A-10) in the regular-season finale this Saturday, April 29. Opening draw is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field. The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse program will honor its eight graduating seniors - attackers Nora McCallion and Sarah Smith, midfielders Maggie Egan and Mallory Grey, defenders Taylor Dachowski, Becky Daub, and Maura Monti, and goalkeeper Amelia Deibler - in a Senior Day ceremony following the conclusion of the game.
