Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Hawks scored the final five goals of the first half and would keep at least a two-goal lead for the rest of the game as the Saint Joseph's women's lacross squad capped the regular-season schedule with a 15-12 win over George Washington on Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks improve to 11-6 and 7-2 in the Atlantic 10 while the Colonials close their season at 3-13 (2-7 A-10).
Saint Joseph's has officially earned the second seed for the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championships, to be hosted on Sweeney Field from May 4-7. Following the first round bye, the Hawks will face the winner of No. 3 Richmond and No. 6 La Salle on Friday, May 5 at 3:30 p.m. To read more, click here.
SJU's 11th win of the season stands as the new program record for single-season wins, surpassing the 2009 squad's previous record of 10.
Senior attacker Nora McCallion led the way with seven points on four goals and three assists while sophomore attacker Francesca Donato (2g, 2a), senior attacker Sarah Smith (2g, 1a), and sophomore midfielders Rebecca Lane (1g, 2a) and Hayley Sabol (2g, 1a) added three-point efforts.
"Today was an overall great team win," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the win, SJU's sixth in seven games. "We had nine different people step up for us offensively, and defensively, we had some great stops to help create transition. On the draw, we did really well. This will help as we move forward into the A-10 Tournament."
Trailing 6-4 with 9:13 to play in the first, SJU kicked off a 5-0 run to close the half as freshman Hope Anhut scored on a feed from McCallion, Donato scored on a feed from Lane (4:51), Sabol put away back-to-back unassisted scores (2:36, 2:08), and Lane closed out the half with her own score with 1:13 to play.
George Washington opened the second half scoring with a goal at the 28:36 mark to cut the deficit to two, 9-7, but McCallion assisted on a man-up goal from Smith (22:58) and went on to score SJU's next two goals (21:17, 18:58) to extend the Hawks' lead by five, 12-7.
The Colonials inched back by scoring three unassisted goals in a row to once against close the deficit to two, 12-10, entering the final 14:10.
However, Lane found Donato on for a man-down score (11:00) and Donato went on to find McCallion to give the Hawks a 14-10 edge entering the final 7:52.
The Colonials battled, scoring the next two goals of the game to trail by just two, once again, heading into the final 4:35, but senior midfielder Maggie Egan found junior midfielder Aly Gormley for her 20th goal of the season with 1:10 remaining in regulation.
For the game, the Hawks owned a 34-27 advantage in shots and 19-16 edge in ground balls while graduate student midfielder Mallory Grey dominated the circle, winning eight of SJU's 18 draw controls and holding the Colonials to just 11 for the game.
Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (10-5, 7-2 A-10) made six saves in the full 60:00; with her 10th win of the season, Deibler tied the program record (with Suzy Herlihy, 2009) for most wins by a goalkeeper in a single season.
GAME NOTES: Following the game, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse program honored senior attackers Nora McCallion and Sarah Smith, midfielders Mallory Grey and Maggie Egan, defenders Taylor Dachowski, Becky Daub, and Maura Monti, and goalkeeper Amelia Deibler in a Senior Day ceremony... All eight saw action in the victory and, with their 30th win as a class, will leave Hawk Hill as the winningest class in program history... Making her 67th career appearance, McCallion tied the program record (with Meghan McDevitt '13) for career games played... McCallion's seven-point effort in today's win moves her to 187 career points, just five points away from Jenna Martino's 192... Her four goals bring her to 132, just nine away from Kerry O'Connell's 141... Her three assists bring her to 55, just one away from McDevitt's 56... She currently still ranks third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in those three categories... With her three-point performance, sophomore midfielder Rebecca Lane now owns 124 career points, which ranks ninth all-time at SJU... Her two assists bring her to 53 for her career, which ranks sixth behind McCallion's 56... The two goals also brings her to 31 for the season, which sits just two shy of teammate Egan's single-season record (33), set last year... Saint Joseph's improves to 5-11 all-time against George Washington and has now won back-to-back games for the first time in the history of the series.
