MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's senior class of Madeline Brunck, Alexis Bush, Niki Carillo, Alex Dominici and Kaylyn Zierke picked up a victory in their final home Atlantic 10 conference game on Sunday as the Hawks topped George Washington, 8-3, at the SJU Softball Field.
Looking to avoid a series sweep, the Hawks (21-24, 12-7 A-10) got on the board in the bottom of the first as Amanda Kulp scored on an RBI single by Caela Abadie to make it 1-0.
George Washington (26-23, 9-11 A-10) answered back in the top of the third as it took advantage of a SJU error to tie the score at 1-1.
A six-run bottom half of the inning blew the game open for the Hawks though as they took a 7-1 lead. Molly Kapala got the scoring started as she drew a bases-loaded walk to score Sarah Ostaszewski. Following a fielding error on a ball hit by Jancarla Herrera that allowed Brunck to score, Abadie delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a grand slam over the right field wall.
An RBI double by Taryn Grober scored Brunck in the third to move the lead to 8-1, and the Hawks' ace Ashley Ventura kept the Colonials at a distance from there.
Despite giving up two runs in the final four innings, Ventura remained in control to pick up the win and move to 13-11 overall with a game-high four strikeouts.
At the plate, Brunck, Abadie, Ostaszewski and Grober each had two hits on the day.
