Women's Lacrosse Dominates Second Half in 19-7 Win over Duquesne

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Leading by three coming out of the halftime break, the Hawks exploded for 10 second-half goals and held the Dukes to just one score in the final 30:00 as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team downed Duquesne, 19-7, in Atlantic 10 action on Rooney Field of Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-5 overall (2-1 A-10) while the Dukes fall to 2-10 overall (0-4 A-10).

Senior attacker Nora McCallion (4g, 1a) and freshman midfielder Penny Green (4g) combined for eight goals while junior midfielder Aly Gormley added a four-point effort (3g, 1a) in SJU's highest goal output of the season.

"I am so proud of our team today," said head coach Alex Kahoe following the victory. "This was a great, full-team, A-10 win as they all showed a lot of heart and hustle. Many people stepped up offensively for us with nine different goal scorers, including Nora and Penny with four apiece. Defensively, we played strong to only allow one goal in the second half."

Paced by McCallion's early hat trick and a pair of early scores by Green, SJU used an 8-2 run from five different scorers to jump out to a six-goal lead with 9:36 to play in the first, but Duquesne scored four of the final five goals of the first half to close its deficit to three.

Gormley opened the second half with her third of the day just 17 seconds in, but Duquesne's Jill Vacanti closed the gap back to three goals, 10-7, with 22:24 to play.

From there, the Hawks exploded for the final nine goals of the game, as Green (21:23), graduate student midfielder Mallory Grey (18:45), sophomore attacker Francesca Donato (16:50), freshman attacker Hope Anhut (15:07), McCallion (14:48) and Green again (10:12) found the back of the net for the first six of those nine goals.

Freshman midfielder Laura Lasprogata scored her first collegiate goal at the 5:32 mark to put on the running clock before sophomore midfielder Sinead Brierley (4:12) put away her second of the year with 4:12 to play.

Freshman midfielder Maria Bio netted her first collegiate goal with 12 ticks remaining in regulation to give the Hawks their 19th goal of the game.

For the game, the Hawks held a 36-28 advantage in shots and edges in ground balls (14-12) and draw controls (14-13). Saint Joseph's held Duquesne scoreless in five free position opportunities.

On the defensive end, junior defender Kristen Kelbon recorded a game-high four ground balls and a game-high four draw controls while freshman midfielder Julia Pash was good for three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (5-4, 2-1 A-10) was strong in net, making nine saves and allowing just seven goals in 57:23. Deibler made six saves in the second half alone, holding the Dukes to just one score in the final 27:23.

Freshman goalkeeper Veronica Wilson played the final 2:37 in her collegiate debut.

Saint Joseph's returns home to host VCU (5-6, 1-2 A-10) this Thursday, April 13. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
