Women's Lacrosse Falls to Richmond in A-10 Semifinals

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team saw its 2017 season come to an end on Friday afternoon as the Hawks fell to Richmond, 15-11, in the Atlantic 10 semifinals on Sweeney Field. SJU closes the season at 11-7 overall while the Spiders (14-5) advance to the A-10 title game vs. UMass (15-3) on Sunday afternoon at noon.

Junior midfielder Aly Gormley led the way for the Hawks, scoring a career-high five goals and adding an assist to match a career-high six points. Senior attacker Nora McCallion went for two goals and a helper while freshman attacker Hope Anhut added a pair of scores in a highly-physical match-up that saw six yellow cards and 65 fouls.

"Richmond played a hard-fought game," said head coach Alex Kahoe. "Their goalkeeper really stepped up and had some great saves. I am proud of our team and how hard we fought, especially in the second half."

Richmond scored five of the first six goals of the game to take a 5-1 advantage by the 17:58 mark of the first half.

However, the Hawks battled back by scoring three of the next four as Gormley found Anhut (17:37) and then scored back-to-back SJU goals (16:23, 9:31) to pull the Hawks to within two, 6-4.

The Spiders responded on a five goal run, with three to close the first half (9:03, 8:37, 0:36) and two to open the second (29:22, 27:24) to extend their lead by seven, 11-4.

The Hawks outscored the Spiders 6-3 over the bulk of the second half, as McCallion (27:07), Gormley (21:11), and senior attacker Sarah Smith (18:49) scored three of the game's next four goals and Gormley (13:28, 7:13) and sophomore attacker Francesca Donato (11:28) scored three of the game's next five to pull SJU to within four, 14-10, entering the final 7:13.

Following a Richmond goal at the 3:57 mark, McCallion would put away her final collegiate goal, the 134th of her career, with 3:27 to play, but that 15-11 score would stand as time expired.

For the game, Saint Joseph's owned a 35-27 advantage in shots, backed by a 18-10 second half, and held a slight 15-13 edge in ground balls. Richmond earned a 9-5 advantage in draw controls in the first half that would lead to a 16-12 edge for the game.

Junior defender Kristen Kelbon turned in a team-high three ground balls and added a caused turnover while graduate student Mallory Grey went for three draw controls, two ground balls, and a caused turnover in her final collegiate game.

Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (10-6) made seven saves in the full-game effort.

The Hawks turned the ball over just six times in the full 60:00.

SJU concludes the 2017 season with 11 wins, the most in a single-season in program history. Today's game capped the careers of senior attackers Nora McCallion and Sarah Smith, senior midfielders Maggie Egan and Mallory Grey, senior defenders Taylor Dachowski, Becky Daub, and Maura Monti, and goalkeeper Amelia Deibler.

"I want to thank all of the seniors for all they have given to the program and how hard they have worked with us over the past three years," added Kahoe. "They all have left a huge mark on our program."
