Box Score The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team got a career-high 11 points from rookie Katie Mayock, but the Hawks couldn't overcome an early deficit as they fell to Penn, 65-45, on Thursday evening at The Palestra.
After a back-and-forth opening to the contest, the host Quakers ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 15-5 edge over the Hawks.
A basket by SJU senior Michala Clay brought her team to within seven, 19-12, early in the second quarter, but Penn responded with a 16-4 run to open a 35-16 lead with 2:06 to go in the period.
Down 40-20 at the half, Saint Joseph's played Penn even in the second half as both teams scored 25 points apiece.
For the game, the Hawks shot 31.5 percent from the field (17-of-54), 21.7 from behind the arc (5-of-23), and hit 6-of-10 from the foul line.
Individually, Mayock added four rebounds and an assist, while Clay finished with six points, five rebounds and two steals.
At the other end, Penn got a game-high 16 points from Princess Aghayere as the Quakers finished the game 25-of-61 from the floor (41 percent), 3-of-18 from three-point range (16.7 percent), and hit 12 of-20 free throws.
The Hawks (0-3, 0-2 Big 5) begin a seven-game homestand on Tuesday when they host Niagara at 7 p.m.
