Softball Tops UMBC In Pirate Clash Finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Behind a complete-game victory from sophomore pitcher Ashley Stokes, the Saint Joseph's softball team earned a 7-2 victory over UMBC in its final game of the East Carolina Pirate Clash on Sunday.

UMBC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Hawks answered back in the bottom half of the inning as an RBI single by Stacey Mayer plated Amanda Kulp to tie the game at 1-1.

Lauren Reilly scored on a UMBC error off a single by Molly Kapala to make it 2-1 in the second, while Mayer scored on a wild pitch in the third to up the lead to 3-1.

In the circle, Stokes held the Retrievers hitless over four-straigth innings, while her teammates kept adding to the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mayer led off with a double and came in to score on a RBI double by Taryn Grober. Stokes helped her own cause later in the innings as Grober scored on an RBI ground out by the SJU starting pitcher to make it 5-1.

UMBC answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Hawks followed with two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2. Kulp scored the first run of the inning off a single by Sarah Ostaszewski, while Mayer scored the second off a sacrifice by Mayer.

Stokes would work around a two-out walk and single to pick up the complete-game win to move to 1-0 on the year. Stokes finished with three strike outs, while allowing just two hits and two earned runs.

At the plate, Mayer was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kapala was 3-for-3 with a run scored and Kulp finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Hawks, who capped their season-opening weekend with a 2-3 mark, are back in action next Friday at the Chanticleer Showdown, opening the three-day tournament at noon versus Pittsburgh.
