Women's Lacrosse Suffers 13-2 Setback vs. #14/13 Towson

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – #14/13 Towson scored the first nine goals of the game, including seven in the first half, to hand the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad a 13-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon on Sweeney Field. With the setback, the Hawks (3-4) have dropped three of their last four contests while the Tigers, who converted six of seven eight-meter opportunities in the win, improve to 5-1.

Sophomore midfielder Laura Lasprogata recorded the first multi-point game of her career with a goal and an assist.

Towson was led on the offensive end by Natalie Sulmonte (4g) and Carly Tellekamp (3g) while goalkeeper Kiley Keating made nine saves and allowed just one goal in 54:13.

Despite a 6-2 advantage in first-half draw controls, the Hawks turned the ball over 18 times in the first 30:00 and the Tigers hit the back of the net on seven of their 11 shots to take a 7-0 advantage into the halftime break; four of those seven scores were on eight-meter goals.

Towson opened the second half with two more goals to extend its lead, 9-0, before Lasprogata took a feed from senior midfielder Aly Gormley and hit the back of the net at the 20:43 mark to put the Hawks on the scoreboard.

The Tigers scored the next four goals on a pair of eight-meters sandwiched between a pair of unassisted scores before Lasprogata fed senior midfielder Kate Payne as time expired with the running clock.

For the game, Towson owned a 23-18 edge in shots, propelled by an 11-3 first half, and shot 56.5 percent for the game. The Tigers also owned a 28-20 advantage in ground balls, but the Hawks held their own in the circle, winning 11 of the game's 16 draw controls as Payne earned six possessions from the circle, just one shy of her single-game career high.

In a game plagued with 52 total turnovers (SJU 29, Towson 23), defender Juliana Strazulo was a difference maker as the senior forced four Tiger turnovers on the afternoon.

Graduate student goalkeeper Liz O'Sullivan (3-4) made three saves vs. seven goals allowed in the first 30:00 while freshman Corinne Buttner came in for the final 30:00, making a career-high five saves vs. six goals allowed.

Saint Joseph's will look to close the non-conference portion of the schedule at .500 at Wagner next Saturday, March 24. Opening draw control at Hameline Field in Staten Island, N.Y. in set for 1:00 p.m. The Hawks open Atlantic 10 conference play the following Thursday, March 29 vs. UMass at 2:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
