MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team opened its home outdoor slate in style on Monday, shutting out Chestnut Hill, 7-0, at the SJU Tennis Complex.
“It was great to be outdoors, and the results indicated our squad's enjoyment,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “We are an outdoor team, and we hope that our outdoor season is now fully underway.”
Saint Joseph's (4-6) got things started with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Peter Dewitt and Johnnie Massart won their third-flight tilt, 6-2, before Andre Fick and Dan Tan clinched the doubles point with a win by the same score in the second. Michael Santa Lucia and Tim Stierle finished off the sweep, cruising to a 6-1 win in the first flight.
The Hawks kept things rolling in singles play. Dewitt and Massart were the catalysts once again, earning 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 wins in the third and fourth flights, respectively. Luis Janko sealed the victory for SJU in the sixth flight, dispatching his opponent with a 6-0, 6-1 result.
Fick was a 6-2, 6-3 winner in the second flight, while Stierle earned a 6-2, 7-6 (4) first-flight win and Santa Lucia polished off the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 supertiebreaker win in the fifth.
Due to an unfavorable weather forecast, Tuesday's match with Morgan State has been postponed to March 27. The Hawks will next take the court on Friday at Richmond before visiting George Washington on Saturday.
