ST. LOUIS - The Saint Joseph's softball team fell to Saint Louis, 9-1, in five innings in the Hawks' Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday at the Billiken Sports Complex.
After a scoreless top of the first, the host Billikens struck for four runs in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI single from Allie Macfarlane and and a three-run home run by Alyssa Chavez.
Saint Joseph's got a run back in the top of the second to make it 4-1 as Taryn Grober scored off a sacrifice fly by Stacey Mayer.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, that would be as close as they'd come as Saint Louis added five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth to open a 9-1 edge, and closed out SJU in the fifth.
For the game, Molly Kapala and Lauren Reilly accounted for Saint Joseph's two hits. In the circle, Ashley Ventura got the loss allowing six runs on five hits over 3.0 innings to fall to 4-7 on the season. Ashley Stokes tossed an inning of relief and allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out a pair.
The Hawks (9-12, 0-1 A-10) and Billikens cap their series with a doubleheader on Sunday set for a 1 p.m. ET start.
