The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its series finale to Dayton, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field.
Playing in frigid temperatures and strong, swirling winds, the Hawks (14-22, 2-10 Atlantic 10) and Flyers (20-19, 10-4 A-10) capped their three-game series on Sunday with the visitors jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Dayton opened the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line by Kyle Davidson in the top of the second. Davidson would come around to make it 3-0 as she scored on a SJU fielding error on ball hit by Kailee Budicin.
Ellie Ziegler pushed the Flyers' lead to 4-0 in the third with a solo home run off the foul pole in right field.
The Hawks would threaten in the fourth and sixth as they got two runners aboard both innings.
Dayton was able to work out jams in both instances though and added two insurance runs in the seventh before setting SJU down in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.
For the game, senior Lauren Reilly, junior Stacey Mayer and freshman Taylor Marinelli each collected a hit for SJU. In the circle, rookie Chelsea Evans fell to 2-2 on the year as she allowed three earned runs over 3.0 innings, while striking out two. Junior Ashley Ventura worked the final four innings for the Hawks, allowing two unearned runs and striking out three.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday at Penn at 4 p.m.
