KINGSTON, R.I. - The Saint Joseph's softball team capped a three-game series sweep over Rhode Island with a 4-2 victory over the Rams on Sunday at the URI Softball Complex.
Coming off 20-1 and 4-0 victories over Rhode Island on Saturday, the Hawks (18-22, 5-10 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a two-run home run by Caela Abadie.
Abadie added to SJU's lead to 3-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly that scored Jancarla Herrera.
Rhode Island (11-28, 3-10 A-10) made it 3-1 in the fourth, but the Hawks answered in the fifth as Molly Kapala scored off a misplayed ball hit Sarah Ostaszewski to make it 4-1.
The Rams got a run back in the sixth, but that would be as close as Rhode Island would get as SJU earned its fourth-straight win.
In the circle, junior Ashley Ventura improved to 9-13 on the season after allowing two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. Rookie Chelsea Evans picked up her first career saves, going 1.2 innings while allowing just one hit.
At the plate, Abadie was 1-for-3 with three runs batted in, while rookie Kirstin Cox was 3-for-3 and Kapala was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday when they host La Salle in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
