WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Saint Joseph's softball team fell to George Washington, 8-2, in Sunday's finale of its weekend series at the GW Softball Field.
After splitting Saturday's doubleheader, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Sarah Ostaszewski scored on a throwing error by the Colonials' first baseman after a single by Lauren Reilly.
George Washington responded in the bottom of the first with two runs on five hits, and added to its lead in the second as it collected four hits and took advantage of an SJU error to score three times and make it 5-1.
Saint Joseph's got a run back in the fourth as Jancarla Herrera scored on a single by Molly Kapala to bring the visitors to within 5-2.
Unfortuately for the Hawks, George Washington added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth and kept SJU off the board over the final three innings to earn the win.
Individually, Kapala drove in one and combined with Ostaszewski, Reilly, Caela Abadie and Stacey Mayer for SJU's five hits. In the circle, Ashley Ventura moved to 10-15 on the season as she was charged with four earned runs on eight hits over 1.2 innings. Chelsea Evans finished the final 4.1 innings allowing four hits and three unearned runs.
The Hawks (21-24, 8-12 A-10) are back in action at Drexel this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
