Willocks Makes History as #16 Field Hockey Routs UMass, 5-0

Box Score

MERION STATION, Pa. – Senior forward Anna Willocks made history on Sunday afternoon, tallying the 156th point of her illustrious career to set a new program record as the 16th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team routed Massachusetts, 5-0, in the rain at Ellen Ryan Field.

Willocks surpassed Hawk legend Linda Buonanno, who totaled 155 points between 1983 and 1986.

“It's obviously a big deal to break a record and I'm really excited about it, but I couldn't do it without my teammates,” Willocks said.  “Today it was about the bigger picture, and winning our first Atlantic 10 game [of the season] was awesome.”

Saint Joseph's (6-2 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) wasted no time making a statement of intent as Willocks forced UMass goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne into a save just 34 seconds into the game.  By the midpoint of the first half, SJU held a 9-1 advantage in shots.

Willocks finally put the Hawks ahead in the 20th minute, cutting back across the circle and sending a diving chip over von dem Borne and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The goal opened the floodgates, as the Hawks would tally twice more to take control of the game heading into halftime.  With 10:59 to go in the half, sophomore Emily Henry brought the ball down the left side and found a sliding Tonya Botherway, who tucked the ball past von dem Borne to double the lead.

Botherway then set up a goal with just 20 seconds to go in the period; the freshman was joined on a 2-on-1 by sophomore Emily Peters, who fired into an open cage to send the Hawks into the break with a 3-0 lead.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Henry was on the receiving end of a pass from freshman Johanna Huse at the post and put it home make it a 4-0 game with 27:28 to go.

Junior Kathrin Bentz put the cherry on top of a successful Sunday with her first goal of the season on a corner with 14:47 to go; Botherway and senior Monica Tice added assists on the play as well.

Massachusetts (4-6 overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) got a foothold in the game late, testing the Hawk defense, but junior goalkeeper Victoria Kammerinke preserved the clean sheet for her third shutout of the season.

The Hawks put the visitors' cage under siege all afternoon, ripping 28 shots to just five for the Minutewomen.  Kammerinke made three saves, all in the final 18 minutes of the game, while von dem Borne made 11 for UMass.  The Hawks enjoyed a 12-1 advantage in penalty corner opportunities as well, turning two of them into goals.

“I'm really excited that we're starting to piece things together,” head coach Lynn Farquhar said.  “We've learned a lot at the beginning of our season, and the goal is, can we put it together both in tough times and in good times?  We're making the ball do the work, we're doing early work for each other, and we're having fun playing, and that's what it's all about.”

It was only fitting that the Hawks would put such a dominant team effort on display the same day that their senior co-captain etched her name in the history books.

“Anna is one of those people that you don't realize how special she truly is until she's not right next to you,” Farquhar said of Willocks.  “I say that because it's obvious that she has scored a lot of points, and she does it with both goals and assists, but what she does behind the scenes is she truly works, she loves her teammates, and she has great pride in who we are, not just her stats or the outcome of the game.  That care, I think, speaks volumes of the Jesuit mission and what our program is about, and it has been a huge component of our growth over the last three years that she's been here.”

The Hawks continue their conference slate this weekend, with a trip to Lock Haven on Friday and a contest at Saint Francis (Pa.) set for Sunday.
