Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Dayton's Jonas Fjeldberg scored the match-winning goal with 4:46 remaining in regulation to hand the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad a heartbreaking 2-1 loss on Sweeney Field on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Hawks (5-11-1, 1-6-0 A-10) are knocked out of Atlantic 10 postseason consideration while the Flyers (10-7-0, 5-2-0 A-10) locked down a postseason spot.
How It Happened
• Dayton's Laurel Aug got clipped inside the box to draw a foul late in the first half, and Kingsford Adjei converted the PK in the 40th minute to give the Flyers a 1-0 advantage by the halftime break; junior defender David Grana did a phenomenal job on Adjei for the match and didn't allow him to get a shot on net outside of the PK.
• Saint Joseph's senior midfielder Matt Mullock subbed in for junior Daniel Morales at the 81:19 mark, and just 20 seconds later, scored his first goal of the year; senior forward Jarod Ramses assisted with a beautifully-executed throw in and, after a scuffle in front of the net, Mullock buried the equalizer (82').
• Dayton's Dennis Ntsin and Seth Antwi assisted on Fjeldberg's 86th-minute match-winner.
• Saint Joseph's sophomore goalkeeper Joseph Boehm (15-11-1, 1-6-0 A-10) made six saves in the full 90:00.
• Dayton fired off 24 shots on the night, landing eight on goal; six of the 16 shots that weren't on goal were blocked by the Hawks' defensive unit.
Behind the Stats
• The road team had four players with four or more shots, led by Fjeldberg's six.
• To start the second half, Mullock and sophomore defender Johnny Cunningham were brought in as fresh legs for the Hawks.
• Ryan Hay was a bright spot in his 19 minutes off the bench, as the freshman forward forced Dayton's Federico Barrios into saves in the 45th and 75th minutes of action for a team-high two shots.
Postgame Thoughts
"Their effort was really good," said head coach Don D'Ambra following the match. "In the first half, we went with a more defensive strategy. We couldn't really create any offense and five minutes before the end of the half, to give up a PK, that's unfortunate. That can take the wind out of your sails a little bit. We made some changes in the second half and went more aggressive, and I thought they did really well with it. We pressed them and we created a lot more chances. To tie it up late in the game, these guys don't quit. They keep fighting. I would have liked to have seen it at least go to overtime to pull off the win. I was gutted to see them get that late goal on us . . . I was so happy for Matty Mullock. He's been working so hard and has been out the entire year . . . I knew he would get after it."
