PHILADELPHIA - Penn scored the first seven goals of the game and led by five or more the rest of the way to upend Saint Joseph's, 13-6, in the inaugural Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic at Drexel's Vidas Field on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-4 overall while the Quakers, who upset #11 Villanova on Friday, improve to 2-3.

Sophomore midfielder Nick Vernacchio scored twice and sophomore attackman Nate Patterson recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Hawks on the offensive end.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Adler (3-4) made 10 saves vs. 13 goals allowed in 59:39.

Propelled by a 6-2 advantage from the X, Penn scored seven straight goals over the opening 20:47.

Vernacchio broke the Hawks' scoring drought with his first of the day at the 4:09 mark of the second quarter. Just 35 seconds later, freshman attackman Ryan Doran converted a man-up goal on a feed from Patterson to cut SJU's deficit to five, 7-2.

However, the Quakers responded with a pair of Adam Goldner goals (2:39, 1:38) to take a 9-2 advantage into the halftime break.

Saint Joseph's and Penn scored two goals apiece in the third quarter as the Quakers held a seven-goal advantage, 11-4, entering the final 15:00.

Patterson scored late in the fourth quarter on a feed from sophomore attackman Matt Tufano to bring the Hawks to within six, 11-5, entering the final 5:39 of regulation, but Penn scored twice more (4:26, 2:46) to put the game away.

For the game, Penn held advantages in shots (44-33) and ground balls (41-23) and won 16 of the game's 21 possessions from the face-off X. Junior long stick midfielder Josh Bosher scooped up a team- and career-high five ground balls for the Crimson and Gray while junior defenseman Liam Hare caused three turnovers by the Quakers.

Rookie face-off specialist Zach Cole went 5-of-15 from the X for all five of SJU's possessions from the dot.

Saint Joseph's closes out non-conference action next Saturday, March 16, against NJIT (1-6). Opening face-off is set for 3:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
