Offense Leads Softball Past Morgan State, 13-4

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Saint Joseph's Caela Abadie and Taryn Grober combined for eight RBI and five runs scored as the Hawks downed Morgan State, 13-4, in six innings on Saturday morning at the JMU Invitational.

Grober, who picked up her 100th career hit with a single in the fourth inning, went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI. Abadie collected six RBI on a pair of home runs, and scored twice, to help SJU improve to 8-9 on the season.

Morgan State grabbed an early lead as it took advantage of two hits and three Saint Joseph's errors to open a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

The lead was short-lived though as the Hawks answered back with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead.

Sarah Ostaszewski got SJU on the board as she doubled home Amanda Kulp for the first run. Three batters later, Abadie connected on her first of two home runs on the day as she delivered a grand slam over the left field wall to make it 5-3. Kirstin Cox plated Jancarla Herrera with a double, then scored off an RBI single by Kulp for the seventh run of the inning.

Grober made it 8-3 in the bottom of the second as she hit a solo home run but Morgan State answered with a home run in the top of the third.

A single by Molly Kapala scored Carly Rybinski started a three-run fourth inning for the Hawks, while Ostaszewski and Kapala scored later in the inning on a fielding error by the center fielder off a shot by Abadie to make it 11-4.

Two innings later, Abadie would walk the game off with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall.

Rookie Amanda Herr picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the season as she allowed just one earned run on five hits, and added a strikeout in 6.0 innings of work.

The Hawks cap play at the JMU Invitational on Sunday with games versus Binghamton and Rutgers.
