Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Rhode Island

Outscoring Rhode Island 25-1 in a doubleheader, the Saint Joseph's softball team completed its series sweep of the Rams with 15-0 and 10-1 victories on Sunday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field.

Coming off a 2-1 victory over the Rams on Saturday, the Hawks (12-11, 3-0 A-10) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game one and never looked back. Jancarla Herrera got the offense going with a three-run double to left field to make it 3-0. After an error and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 5-0, Molly Kapala singled to right center, scoring two more for the Hawks.

Ahead 7-0, Caela Abadie connected on a two-run home run to dead center, with Taryn Grober connecting on a solo shot to center in the next at-bat to make it 10-0.

Saint Joseph's took advantage of two more Rhode Island errors in the third, with Kapala delivering the biggest blow with a two-run home run that made it 15-0.

In the circle, rookie Amanda Herr was in control throughout as she allowed just three hits to earn the win and improve to 4-0 on the year.

The Hawks carried their momentum on both sides of the ball into game two and quickly jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first. Abadie drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0, while Grober followed with a two-run double to extend SJU's lead.

A busy bottom of the third saw Saint Joseph's open a 10-0 edge as it scored seven runs on four hits and took advantage of an error, a passed ball, three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Rhode Island (11-13, 0-3 A-10) would get a run back in the fifth, but senior Ashley Ventura closed the door with a game-ending ground out to shortstop.

Earning  her second win in as many days, Ventura limited the Rams to just five hits as she improved to 8-8 on the season.

Kapala finished the day going 3-for-3 with five runs scored, four RBI, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Delaware. Game one is set for a 2 p.m. start.
