Softball Drops Pair To Saint Louis

The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader to Saint Louis, 6-4 and 12-0, on Saturday at the SJU Softball Field.

In the opener, Saint Joseph's (23-21, 11-8 A-10) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Kirstin Cox beat the throw home off a fielder's choice by Molly Kapala.

The Billikens tied it at 1-1 in the third on a RBI double by Sadie Wise, but the Hawks regained the lead in the bottom half of the third as Cox scored on a double by Sarah Ostaszewski to make it 2-1.

Kaylyn Breitbach led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to tie it once again, and Wise put Saint Louis ahead 6-2 with a grand slam later in the inning.

Saint Joseph's made it 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth as Jancarla Herrera scored the first run on a RBI single by Kulp, while Cox followed with a single that scored Carly Rybinski.

The Hawks threatened in the fifth, but stranded two runners and the Billikens made quick work of SJU in the next two innings to pick up the win.

In the circle, Ashley Ventura moved to 12-14 on the season with the loss as she allowed six earned runs on eight hits, while striking out six.

Saint Louis (15-29, 9-9 A-10) carried momentum into game two as the visitors took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and finished with 12 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of three SJU errors.

Cox, Amanda Kulp and Caela Abadie accounted for Saint Joseph's three hits in the nightcap, while Amanda Herr took the loss as she allowed five earned runs in 2.0 innings of work after tossing two scoreless innings in game one. Coming in for relief, Chelsea Evans allowed five earned runs over 3.0 innings and added a pair of strike outs.

The two teams will finish their three-game series with a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday that will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony honoring the four Hawk seniors.
