Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Seniors Kathrin Bentz and Pepa Serrano combined for seven points on Friday to lead the 11th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team past UMass, 4-1, in the Hawks' Atlantic 10 opener at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks (7-1 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) set the tone for the afternoon six minutes into the game, as sophomore Tonya Botherway tipped home her sixth goal of the season on a penalty corner.
• Bentz notched an assist on the play, as she would again three minutes into the second quarter; this time, it was junior Jordan Olenginski who redirected the ball past UMass keeper Marlise van Tonder to double the lead.
• Serrano and Bentz would effectively put the game away with goals two and a half minutes apart midway through the third quarter.
• The Minutewomen (3-5 overall, 1-1 Atlantic 10) would get on the board in the fourth as Emily Crawford scored her first goal of the season with 4:22 to go.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks held a 16-9 advantage in shots and earned six attacking corners while conceding three for UMass.  SJU converted on three of its six corner opportunities.
• Senior Victoria Kammerinke made four saves on the afternoon, while junior Cassidy Atchison was credited with a defensive save.  Van Tonder made nine stops in defeat.
UP NEXT
The Hawks remain in Massachusetts for a matchup of ranked teams as Saint Joseph's visits #17 Boston College on Sunday.  Game time is set for noon.
