The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team kicked off the spring portion of its slate this weekend with a pair of matches. The Hawks fell to Siena on Friday night before going down to Navy on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• At the Springton Indoor Tennis Club on Friday, sophomore
Alex Kramer and freshman
Stow Weiss got the Hawks off to a strong start with a 7-5 doubles win, but the visitors earned two wins of their own to secure the doubles point.
• Weiss earned a singles win in the second flight, rolling past Maanya Viswanath, 6-0, 6-3, while junior
Amanda Nava outlasted Meagan Brown, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in a first-flight supertiebreaker.
• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Saints secured the 4-2 match victory with wins in three of the five completed singles matches.
• On Saturday, the hosts from Navy took the early lead with three doubles decisions. In singles play, both Nava and sophomore
Paige Conrad pushed their singles matches to supertiebreakers in the first and fourth flights, respectively, but the Midshipwomen swept the singles results to earn the 7-0 win.
HAWK TALK
• "It was a good first match to get rid of the opening jitters," head coach
Ian Crookenden said of Friday's match. "It was a very nice evening for freshman
Stow Weiss, winning in both singles and doubles. I liked the competitive spirit in every match."
• "Despite the score against Navy, a perennial NCAA Tournament squad, there were some very positive lessons learned today by our young squad," Crookenden said on Saturday. "Each match is giving us clear indications of what work we have to do to be ready for our first conference challenge later this month against Rhode Island. A very solid performance turned in today, especially by sophomore
Paige Conrad."
UP NEXT
The Hawks will return to the Springton Indoor Tennis Club on Saturday, February 8, for a matchup against Quinnipiac.
