The decision to postpone fall sports competition impacts five Saint Joseph's athletic teams: field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's cross country. In addition, Saint Joseph's spring sports teams will not compete in intercollegiate competition during the fall semester. Consistent with the A-10, if pandemic conditions improve, while highly unlikely, we will consider reevaluating our plan for sports.
Â
All Saint Joseph's student-athletes will continue to prepare for competition with skill instruction, coaching and strength training sessions, and a gradual return to team practice, during the fall semester.Â
Â
"The health and safety of our student-athletes and staff is paramount. We all desperately wish we could return to the playing field this fall, but we've made the decision based on health-related factors, and believe that postponing play until the spring is the best course of action," said Saint Joseph's Athletic Director
Jill Bodensteiner. "Our student-athletes are strong, passionate and resilient, and they deserve the opportunity to play an uninterrupted season; we simply did not feel that was possible in the fall semester. We will continue to support our student-athletes in all respects – including a focus on their physical and mental health – and look forward to cheering them on in the future."
Â
Saint Joseph's will continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 developments, but at this time, its winter and spring sports will begin competition as scheduled. All student-athlete experiences will occur in accordance with the University's return to campus plan.
