Marrero Sets Program Record for Block Assists in Four-Set Match as Volleyball Picks Up First Win of Season at Chestnut Hill

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Jennifer Marrero's seven block assists set a new program record in a four-set match in the 25-point era (since 2008), highlighting the USciences volleyball team's first win of the season at city-rival Chestnut Hill on Thursday night.

Marrero broke the previous record of five, falling one short of the overall program record of eight set by Simran Sangu in 2017.

She led a University of the Sciences defense that had 18 block assists on the night, two shy of the program record for a four-set match in the 25-point era set in 2015.

Bianca Galis also tied a career-high with four, while Natalia Velez had three and Kerrigan Clem added two.

Velez also capped a career and match-high 18-kill performance with thee of the final four points on kills. She hit .359 and led all players with 15 digs for her first double-double of the year.

Tori Wright was right behind her with a season-best 17 kills on .300 hitting, to go along with 13 digs for her first double-double of the season, while Clem also had a career-high in kills with 10 on .381 hitting.

University of the Sciences had season-highs of 57 kills on .282 hitting, while holding Chestnut Hill to just .128 percent behind its block.

The Devils also set new a season-best in assists with 54, with a match-high 52 coming from Angeli Roman Medina as she set a new career-best. She also had 10 digs for her third double-double of the year.

Galis and Lauren Lim were in double-figures in digs with 13 and 12 respectively as well, as USciences also set a new season-high with 69 digs.

The Devils would have to work for the victory though after finding themselves up two sets and 24-20 in the third, as CHC staved off four set points as part of set-ending 7-1 run to force a fourth.

Chestnut Hill then rallied from three down twice in the fourth, taking an 18-16 lead before tying it at 21 after five straight USciences points had made the score 21-18.

Velez took over from there, recording three straight kills before a bad Griffins set secured the victory.

Six straight points to break a 6-6 tie, which featured two kills from both Wright and Velez, propelled the Devils to a 25-19 first set win.

University of the Sciences then had to hold off Chestnut Hill in the second after six straight Griffins points made the score 22-21.

Velez responded with a kill, and then teamed with Marrero for a block before an error gave the Devils a 2-0 lead.

University of the Sciences is right back at it tomorrow, hosting Caldwell at 6 p.m.
