Volleyball Erases Two Deficits; Falls in Five Sets to East Stroudsburg in Non-Conference Finale

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Twice the USciences volleyball team erased a deficit in its non-conference finale against East Stroudsburg on Tuesday night at Bobby Morgan Arena.

The Devils responded from respective 15-25 and 20-25 first and third set losses with respective 25-18 and 25-21 second and fourth set wins to send a match to a fifth set for their first time in their season.

University of the Sciences then led as late as 11-10 in the fifth following a Tori Wright kill, only to have ESU tally five of the match's six final points.

The Devils had trailed 6-4 in the fifth, before taking their first lead with a 4-1 run that was capped by back-to-back Natalia Velez kills.

The two teams traded the next seven points, with an earlier kill by Wright putting USciences on top 10-9.

That was part of a season and match-high 20-kill performance for the junior, the fifth such performance of her career. She fell one dig shy of her third double-double of the season.

University of the Sciences student-athletes actually had the three-highest kill totals, with Velez adding 16 and Rachel Chan contributing a season-best 15, 13 more than her previous best.

The Devils had eight more kills than ESU, 62-54, as well as 13 more digs, 95-82, but the Warriors held advantages in blocks, 13-7, and service aces, 7-2.

Lauren Lim led all players in digs for a second straight match with a season-high 25, while adding a career-best six assists.

Angeli Roman Medina (team-high 33 assists) added a career-best 18 digs for her fifth double-double of the year, while Velez had a season-best 16 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Taylor Liu also had 11, more than double her previous career-high, while Sydney Lawless fell one shy of making it five Devils in double-figures with a new season-high.

Jennifer Marrero tied a new career-best with seven blocks, three of which were solos, to lead all players.

University of the Sciences is back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m., returning to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play at Wilmington.
