Box Score PHILADELPHIA – After Dominican took the first set with a late surge, the USciences volleyball team used late runs of its own to win both the second and third, before cruising in the fourth en route to a 3-1 victory over the Chargers on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.
Dominican scored the final five points of the first to win it 25-19 and were leading 18-17 in the second before the Devils made their move with eight unanswered on Tori Wright's serve.
Wright contributed an ace and a kill in the stretch, which also featured a kill by Kerrigan Clem and three more from Natalia Velez, the last of which tied the match at 1-1.
University of the Sciences was in a similar situation in the third, trailing 21-23 before Rachel Chan kills both started and ended a 4-0 set-ending run.
The Devils then hit .462 in the fourth en route to a dominating 25-11 score-line.
Velez had a career day, leading all players with career-best 19 kills on .400 hitting, to go along with a team-high 18 digs and match-high three aces, the latter two of which were one shy of her career-bests.
It was her fourth straight double-double.
Wright tied the match's second-highest kill total with 15 on .289 hitting, and Chan added eight while swinging .263.
Emma Lauersen added career-bests of six kills on .231 hitting and a team-high three blocks.
University of the Sciences set new a new season-best for kills in a four-set match with 54, swinging .277 and holding Dominican to 42 kills on .156 hitting.
Caelin Jaskot led USciences with 27 assists, while Lauren Lim was second on the team with 13 digs.
The Devils are back at home on Tuesday to host city-rival Jefferson at 7 p.m.
