Volleyball, Marrero Set Program Records for Block Assists in Five-Set Triumph Over Post

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The USciences volleyball team tied a program record (25-point era) with 22 block assists, helping lift the Devils to a five-set triumph over Post on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.

The Devils matched the record set on Oct. 14, 2017 at Concordia.

Jennifer Marrero made history individually for the second time this season, tying Simran Sangu's program record (25-point era) of eight that was set on the above-mentioned date.

Earlier this season, the junior also set the program record for block assists in a four-set match with seven.

Bianca Galis and Caelin Jaskot both tied career-highs with four block assists, with Jaskot adding a block solo to set a new career-best with five overall.

Kerrigan Clem and Natalia Velez also had a block solo while contributing three and two block assists, respectively, as USciences out-blocked Post 14-6.

Still the Devils had to hold off Post after the Eagles won the fourth set 25-19.

University of the Sciences grabbed the momentum back with the first two points of the fifth en route to leading throughout, including by as many as five on two occasions.

The first occurrence came at 7-2 before Post got as close as one twice, at 6-7 and 8-9. The Devils answered the latter with the next four points though, and the Eagles could get no closer than two the remainder of the set.

Velez ended the match with her 21st kill, a new career-high that was six more than any other player. She hit .386 and added 18 digs, one shy of her career-best, to record her sixth double-double in seven matches.

Tori Wright had the match's second-highest total with 15 kills and also had 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.

Lauren Lim led University of the Sciences with 20 digs, while Sydney Lawless paced the Devils with a season-best three aces.

Angeli Roman Medina tied Jaskot with a match-high 22 assists.

Notably, Jaskot moved into fourth in program history with 1449 career assists.

Trailing 12-14 in the first, Post scored eight unanswered to take control as it held off late a USciences push that could only get as close as one twice, at 23-22 and 24-23, with the Eagles responding each time.

The Devils answered by winning the second and third by identical scores of 25-17.

University of the Sciences takes a week off before returning to the court next Saturday at Nyack.
