Volleyball Outlasts Nyack for Second Straight Five-Set Win on Saturday Night

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Despite two two-point set losses, the USciences volleyball team rallied twice to ultimately prevail 15-13 in the fifth for a second straight five-set triumph at Nyack on Saturday night.

The Devils bounced back from 24-26 and 25-27 first and third set losses to win the second and fourth by identical 25-19 scores.

They then overcame an early 1-4 deficit in the fifth, scoring three unanswered to knot the score at four before using five in a row later to go ahead 12-8.

Back-to-back kills by Bianca Galis and Natalia Velez started the run and after a Nyack error, Caelin Jaskot and Jennifer Marrero combined for a block before Sydney Lawless capped it with a service ace.

The Warriors got as close as 13-12 and 14-13, but kills by Galis and Tori Wright made sure USciences would hold on for the victory.

Galis finished second in the match with a season-high 15 kills, adding a season-best 15 digs – one shy of a career-high – for her first double-double of the season. She also set a new career-best with five blocks.

Velez led all players with 19 kills and tied her career-high with 19 digs for her seventh double-double in eight matches.

Marrero fell one block assist shy of tying the single-match program record (25-point era) of eight for the second match in a row. She added a block solo to tie her career-best of eight blocks for the second consecutive match.

Her 51 block assists this year are now tied for eighth in the program's single-season annals.

Angeli Roman Medina set a new career-best with 20 digs, adding a match-high 33 assists for seventh double-double of the year

Wright also had a double-double, her second in a row, with 12 digs and 11 kills, the latter of which was the match's third-highest total.

Lauren Lim led University of the Sciences with 21 digs and joined Velez in tying a career-best with a match-high four service aces.

Lindsey Phan notably had a season-best three service aces.

University of the Sciences plays its penultimate home match on Tuesday, hosting Goldey-Beaocm at 7 p.m.
