Men's Track & Field Opens Indoor Season With Strong Showing

STATEN ISLAND N.Y. - After missing competition for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic  the Saint Joseph's men's track and field team opened its indoor season on Friday at the Fastrack Season Opener. The Hawks competed in multiple disciplines throughout the night. 

ABOUT THE EVENT:
  • The event took place at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
  • The Hawks were represented in the 60 meter dash, one mile run, 400-meter dash, 500-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 3K, 4x800 relay, 4x400 relay, long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
  • Team scores were not calculated.
HOW THE HAWKS FINISHED:
TRACK EVENTS:
  • Rookie Matthew Kline kicked things off for the Hawks with a sixth place finish in the men's 60 meter dash. Kline clocked a time of 7.42 to open the season. 
  • In the men's one-mile run, senior Michael Szwed placed second and sophomore Owen Moelter took third. Szwed ran a time of 4:21.17 and Moelter ran 4:22.17.  
  • Senior Michael Welde placed second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.09. He was the first collegiate runner to cross the line and also did so in IC4A qualifying fashion. 
  • The 500m dash saw rookie Michael Brittingham make his collegiate debut in the. The freshman ran 1:05.50 to place third overall. He was followed closely by senior Kyle Magee for fourth place in a time of 1:05.53. Both times are just shy of the IC4A qualification standard. 
  • Graduate student Stephen McClellan and senior Javier Linares-Martin grabbed second and third overall, respectively, in the 800 meters. McClellan ran a time of 1:57.39, while Linares-Martin clocked a 1:57.53. Freshman Josh Thaler (6th), sophomore Tommy Johnson (7th), and sophomore Lleyton Winslow (10th) also finished in the top ten of the event.
  • In his collegiate debut in the 3,000 meters sophomore Gavin Campbell placed sixth running a time of 8:55.49. 
  • St. Joe's 4 x 800 meter captured the win in an IC4A qualifying time of 7:53.00. The team was made up of sophomore Jayden Greene, freshman Samuel Hydro, Moelter, and Szwed. 
  • The men's 4 x 400 meter relay placed second overall and qualified for IC4A championship. The relay was made up of sophomore Eric Ford, Welde, Magee, and Brittingham
FIELD EVENTS:
  • Sophomore John Salt placed sixth in the long jump. Salt's best jump measured in at 6.56 meters.
  • Sophomore Patrick Fehm opened his season on top, winning the men's high jump and placing second in the triple jump. 
UP NEXT:
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 15 at the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State.
