Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Hofstra in Season Opener, 10-9

Penny Green scored two goals on Wednesday
Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team opened its 2021 season on Wednesday, falling to visiting Hofstra, 10-9, on a cold day at Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Katie Whelan opened the scoring for Hofstra (1-0) before Sophia Kolkka tied things up for the Hawks with 24:40 to go in the half.  The Pride would then go on a 4-0 run to open a 5-1 lead with 16:10 to play in the first half.

• Saint Joseph's (0-1) would rip off four of the last five goals of the period to claw back within one at halftime.  Midway through the frame, Stephanie Kelly got on the board before Julia Pash scored with 11:11 on the clock to cut the deficit to two.  After Arianna Esposito nabbed her second of the day to break up the run, Lauren Figura and Penny Green tallied just 40 seconds apart to make it a 6-5 game.

• Shortly after the break, the Hawks took their first lead of the day.  Sam McGee tied things up right off the opening draw, and after a Hofstra goal restored the Pride's lead, Green netted an equalizer before McGee grabbed her second of the frame to make it an 8-7 game with 26:28 to play.

• Alyssa Parrella scored twice to put the visitors back on top at 9-8 before Kolkka found the net for the second time with 11:59 to play to once again bring the Hawks level.  Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Grace Langella finished off her hat trick with 8:31 to go to put Hofstra back on top, and the Hawks couldn't find a late equalizer.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Green, Kolkka, and McGee all scored twice for SJU, while Kelly tallied a pair of assists on the day.

• Parrella's five points were a game high.

• Pash led the Hawks with three draw controls and was one of five Hawks with two ground balls.

Melissa Semkiw made 11 saves in her SJU debut, while Jess Smith tallied five for the Pride.
