PHILADELPHIA – For the first time since 2013-14, three Saint Joseph's Hawks have earned All-Big 5 honors as organization officials announced its end of year awards on Tuesday.
Saint Joseph's redshirt junior Taylor Funk was named to the All-Big 5 First Team and was selected Most Improved Player and the Big 5's Leading Free Throw Shooter, while redshirt senior Ryan Daly was honored as the Big 5's Leading Scorer and joined Funk on the All-Big 5 First Team. Additionally, freshman Jordan Hall earned All-Big 5 Second Team recognition and shares Rookie of the Year honors alongside Temple's Damian Dunn.
The 2020-21 season was a transformative one for Funk who returned to Saint Joseph's starting lineup after missing a majority of the previous season due to a hand injury. Working diligently with the Hawks' coaching staff, Funk entered the year in the best shape of his career, and emerged as one of the top scoring threats in the Big 5 as he led the team with 52 three-pointers and increased his production from 40 percent shooting and 9.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 2019-20, to 17.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest, while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor this year. The eighth Hawk to be named Big 5 Most Improved Player, Funk also earned the Big 5's Top Free Throw Shooter honor after connecting on 83.8 percent from the line (57-of-68).
Returning to Hawk Hill for a final season, Daly's year was nearly cut short due to a hand injury, but detailed work with Saint Joseph's coaching, medical, and strength and conditioning staffs allowed him to help the Hawks finish the season with a flourish. Averaging 18.5 points per game this season, Daly is the first Hawk to earn the Big 5's Top Scorer honoree twice. In his two seasons at Saint Joseph's, the two-time All-Big 5 honoree elevated his game under Head Coach Billy Lange and his staff as he averaged 20.1 points per game, becoming just the fourth Hawks since 1947 to average 20 points a game for his SJU career.
Lightly recruited out of Neumann Goretti, Hall's abilities were sharpened under the tutelage of Lange and his staff as Hall transformed into one of the top distributors in both the Big 5 and the Atlantic 10 as he paced the Hawks and led all freshmen nationally in assists per game (5.7). Competing in 20 contests, Hall developed into a threat at both ends of the court as he led Saint Joseph's in steals (25), ranked second on the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg) and third in scoring (10.6 ppg). Evolving throughout the season under the guidance of the Hawks' coaching staff, Hall becomes just the fifth Hawk to earn Big 5 Rookie of the Year honors.
