Golf, Larkin Card Third-Lowest Rounds in Recorded Program History at Season-Opening Tri-Match

Stats

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. - The USciences golf program opened its 2021 season with the third-lowest team round in recorded program history (Since Fall 2009), with freshman Thomas Larkin carding the third-lowest individual round in recorded program history, at Union League Liberty Hill on Wednesday afternoon.

The Devils shot a collective 321, trailing only a 315 they shot at the same course on Oct. 21, 2019 and the recorded program record of 310 shot on Oct. 1, 2012.

Leading the way was Larkin, whose 73 in his first collegiate round now only trails 70s shot by Scott Cahayla on Sept. 13, 2009 and Ian Byerly on Oct. 1, 2012.

The freshman trailed the tri-match winner by just one stroke to tie for second in the field of 15. He led the field with 13 pars, was second in par-4 scoring (E) and third in in par-3 scoring (+1).

University of the Sciences placed second in the tri-match, beating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Jefferson by 20 strokes, while perennial CACC power Goldey-Beacom won with a total of 295.

Sophomore Matthew McCaffrey tied his collegiate-best round of 81, and freshman Joe Kepic was one shot behind him in his first collegiate round, as both placed in the top-half of the field.

McCaffrey matched Larkin in par-3 scoring, while Kepic led the field in that same category at even-par.

Redshirt-sophomore Andrew Blake rounded out USciences' scoring with an 85, as he was fourth in the field in both par-5 scoring (E) and birdies (2).

Tyler Blake also played, shooting an 86.

Freshmen Adam Chen, Anthony Fiacco and Aidan Ftaceck also made their collegiate debuts, but were unfortunately unable to complete their rounds.

The Devils next compete in the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational this weekend, traveling north for the two-day event scheduled for Sept. 12-13.
