Men’s Track Opens 2022 at Nittany Lion Challenge

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -  Saint Joseph's men's track and field opened the new year at the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State. The Hawks competed in multiple different disciplines throughout the day. 

ABOUT THE EVENT:
  • The event took place at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track at Penn State.
  • On the track the Hawks were represented in the mile, 60-meter dash, 600 meters, 400 meters, 1,000 meters, 800 meters, 200 meters, 3,000 meters, the distance medley relay (DMR), and the 4x400 meter relay.  
  • In the field events the Hawks were represented in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump.
  • Team scores were not calculated for this meet.
HOW THE HAWKS FINISHED:
TRACK EVENTS:
  • Getting things started on the track, junior Matthew Coffey placed 12th in the mile in a field of 34. The junior recorded a time of 4.16.26, his collegiate best time, and just a second shy of the IC4A qualifying standard. 
  • The 600 meters saw sophomore Jayden Greene and senior Javier Linares place fourth and fifth, respectively. Greene clocked a time of 1.21.99 followed closely by Linares' 1.22.16. 
  • The Hawks had an incredibly strong showing in the 400 meters with all four athletes placing in the top 10. SJU swept the top two spots with senior Michael Welde winning the event, running a time of 49.25. Sophomore Eric Ford followed for second, recording a time of 49.45. Senior Kyle Magee (4th, 50.16) and freshman Michael Brittingham (6th, 50.49) rounded out the placing for the Hawks. 
  • Sophomore Tommy Johnson recorded a time of 1:58 in the 800 meters. The time was good for eighth overall in a field of 16. 
  • Senior Bobby Hastie recorded a collegiate best time of 8.19.53 which was good for sixth overall in the 3,000 meters. The time also satisfies the IC4A standard for this event. Hasite becomes the second individual to qualify for the IC4A meet this season.
  • To conclude the running events for the day, the 4x400 meter relay of Ford, senior Kris Edobi, Magee, and Brittingham clocked a time of 3.20.90 which was good for third out of a field of ten. 
FIELD EVENTS:
  • Sophomore Donald Adams cracked the top 10 with a seventh place finish after a leap of 6.53.

St. Joe's returns to action next Saturday at the Moravian Invitational.
