PHILADELPHIA - The 27th edition of the Hawk Classic is set for action for the next two days, the four-game tournament slated for December 20-21. Saint Joseph's comes off a 10-day break between games to face Wright State (1-9, 0-0 Horizon) before meeting with either James Madison or Eastern Michigan on day two of the action.
The Hawks meet the Raiders for the first time in program history when the two collide inside Hagan Arena, SJU hosting the first Hawk Classic since 2019. St. Joe's has raised the championship 12 times in the history of the event, last coming in 2017.
The winners of each matchup will play each other on Wednesday afternoon, while the losing teams will also compete. The Hawks will host the Wednesday matchup at 3 p.m., opponent determined by results of Tuesday's matchup. Wright State will be guaranteed to play in the 1 p.m. game on day two.
St. Joe's are coming off the first loss of the season after starting on its second-largest win streak to open a campaign (9-0). A hot-shooting #25 Villanova team knocked down over 50% of its attempts and 60% from deep. Talya Brugler has scored double-digits in her past four games of the season, leading the team with 15.0 points per contest. Olivia Mullins has made a three-pointer in six-straight games, a team-best. Mullins has nearly doubled her ppg in this year compared to her first two years on campus. Mackenzie Smith has scored in double figures in eight games on the season, having yet to record less than eight points in a game.
Scouting The Raiders
The Raiders look for its first Division I win of the season, entering the Hawk Classic on a seven-game losing skid. WSU has an average scoring deficit of -19.2 points, albeit having faced traditional powerhouses in Ohio State (105-52) and Tennessee (96-57). In the lone win of the season, Wright State dominated in a 98-37 win over Ohio Christian.
Bryce Nixon paves the way for the Raiders with a team-high 11.4 points per game, one of the most elite shooters in the country from deep after connecting on 25-51 (49.0%) of her attempts on the year. Isabelle Bolender (8.5) and Emily Chapman (8.0) both average at least eight points per game, while Makiya Miller leads the team with 22 assists while pitching in 7.7 points per game. No Raider averages more than 3.7 rebounds per game, led by Kacee Baumhower.
Wire to Wire
In 400 total minutes of basketball so far in the season, the Hawks have led for a total of 320 minutes and 25 seconds of that time, trailing for just 63:18 minutes. For 80.10% of the season, the Hawks have held a lead. Only 15.83% of the time has Saint Joseph's been trailing in a contest, largely in part due to trailing Villanova (39:45) more than the rest of the opponents combined (23:33). SJU has finished a game with the lead for more than 38 minutes on five occasions (Penn, Vanderbilt, North Florida, Drexel, Rider), having never trailed against the Quakers, the Ospreys and the Broncs.
