The Saint Joseph's softball team opens its 2022 season this Friday as the Hawks travel to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in Georgia Tech's Buzz Classic. Coming off a 2021 campaign that saw the Hawks capture the Atlantic 10 North Division crown, St. Joe's head coach Erin Brooks is looking forward to the start of the new year.
"I'm excited for the season," said Brooks. "We have some great young talent and some growing leaders. Our program is on the right path and I'm excited to see how that plays out throughout the season." Â
Saint Joseph's returns 13 letterwinners from last year's teams, including three starting pitchers - Amanda Herr, Emily Siler and Saige Stutz - who accounted for 22 of the Hawks' 26 wins in 2021. Making a combined 36 starts, the trio totaled 16 complete games and nine shutouts a season ago, with Stutz pacing the team with 60 strikeouts, and Herr posting a team-best 3.51 ERA.
Around the infield, Saint Joseph's has a strong core of returning letterwinners with graduate student Taylor Marinelli, senior Carly Rybinski, juniors Payton Baxter, Madison Fife, Jessica Gaughan and Alyssa Notarianni, and sophomore Lauren Pscolka, while in the outfield, senior Jordan Hinkle, junior Erica Lawrence and sophomore Nicole Bondoc will lead the way. Newcomers Sarah Cancila, Kaelin Cash, Hailey Malito Karlee Smith, Kayla Tauber and Kate Woulfe solidify St. Joe's talented roster and will help the Hawks compete for one of six A-10 Championship berths.
Despite losing several A-10 All-Conference standouts to graduation in the offseason, the Hawks remain poised to contend for the conference crown as they were picked third in the A-10 Preseason Poll. And with the season approaching, Brooks is optimistic at the opportunities for her team and the season ahead.
"We did lose a good amount of talent and leadership, but it's opened the door and given others the opportunity to lead and some younger talent to step up," Brooks said.
