Men's Track & Field has Solid First Day at the A-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Saint Joseph's men's track and field team had a strong showing on the first day of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships. SJU ended the day with a total of 12 points. They currently sit in seventh place overall in team standings.
 
OF NOTE:
George Mason Field House is a flat track and conversions to banked track time apply for certain events.
 
SCORING PERFORMANCES:
  • Sophomore Patrick Fehm scored the first points of the meet for the Crimson& Gray. Fehm placed seventh overall in the long jump with a best mark of 6.88m to score two points for the Hawks. This mark is also a collegiate best for Fehm.
  • In the 5,000 meters, graduate student Bobby Hastie inserted himself with the lead pack early and never looked back. That decision paid off in dividends as Hastie claimed second overall scoring eight points for the Hawks. Hastie's official time was 14:26.78.
  • The distance medley relay (DMR) of graduate student George Steinhoff (1,200m), sophomore Ladi Bamgbose (400m), sophomore Gavin Campbell (800m), and junior Matthew Coffey (1,600m) placed seventh overall in a time of 10:12.31 to cap off the scoring performances from the first day.
FINALS QUALIFIERS:
  • In the 400m trials senior Michael Welde quickly asserted himself as one to watch in the final tomorrow. Welde won the trials in a time of 48.63 and will be the top seed going into the final.
  • Senior Kyle Magee and freshman Michael Brittingham easily qualified for tomorrow's final in the 500m with Magee winning the trials in a time of 1:05.06 and Brittingham taking fifth in a time of 1:06.02.
  • Jayden Greene grabbed an auto qualifier out of his heat of the 800m. Greene recorded a time of 1:55.51. With the conversion this time should qualify him for the IC4A Championship next week, as well.
  • Doubling back from the 400m, Welde  secured a spot in the 200m final. Welde placed sixth overall with a time of 22.25.
UP NEXT:
St. Joe's returns to George Mason Field House on Sunday for the final day of competition for the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. In addition to the above-mentioned finals, SJU will also be represented in the triple jump, high jump, mile, 3,000m, 4x800m relay, and  4x400m relay. The first event of the day for the Crimson & Gray is the triple jump which is set to start at 9 a.m.
