Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla – Evan Sinclair's go-ahead three-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh closed out the scoring, capping a four-RBI performance to help the USciences baseball team close out its spring break trip with a 6-4 triumph over West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday morning.
Joe Duffy kept the inning alive with a two-out walk, before Eddie Parry singled to bring Sinclair to the plate.
Justin Derk then came on to shut the door with three scoreless innings for his second career save.
The senior worked a 1-2-3 seventh before stranding two runners in the eighth. Then with the tying runner at the plate following a two-out single in the ninth, he induced a game-ending groundout.
Derk scattered two hits in his three frames, striking out two with one base on balls.
He relieved Ben Bradt, who improved to 2-1 with a second straight quality start. The sophomore worked around nine hits to surrender just two earned. He struck out five with a season-low one walk.
Sinclair's four RBI were a new career-high, as he also tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Duffy reached base in all five of his at-bats, finishing 2-for-2 with three walks and a double.
AJ Pena scored twice as he reached twice via a hit and a base on balls
Chris Anderson, Pena and Duffy all singled to load the bases with zero outs in the third, and Parry followed with a walk to open the scoring.
University of the Sciences would only get one more run though, on a double play, and WVW quickly responded with a three-run bottom-half after a leadoff error.
The Bobcats then regained the lead once more in the sixth, 4-3, as a two-out error allowed a second unearned run to score.
University of the Sciences is scheduled to play three games against Lincoln this weekend, the first two of which are on the road this Saturday at 12 p.m.
