Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – USciences baseball got five scoreless innings from both of its starters, Chris Brown and Justin Derk, lifting the Devils to a sweep (6-3 and 14-1) of Nyack on Saturday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field.
Joe Duffy reached base three times in both games, finishing the day 4-for-7 with six runs, three stolen bases, two RBIs and two hit-by-pitches.
His six runs moved him into fourth in program history with 87 for his career, while he is now tied for fifth all-time with 30 career stolen bases.
Game One
Trailing 6-0, Nyack had the tying run reach first base with one out in its final at-bat, but Brendon Chin was able to induce a game-ending double play to cap two innings of relief in his first collegiate appearance.
A four-run first turned out to be enough run support for Brown, who earned a second consecutive win with five scoreless innings in which he allowed just four hits. He struck out four, walked one and retired the first seven batters he faced.
Duffy got the four-run first started with a hit-by-pitch, and he would immediately come around to score on a Nick Cerelli double.
Eddie Parry was then hit by a pitch and after stealing second, Evan Sinclair drove in two with a single.
The second out was recorded but Eddie May reached on catcher's interference, and Frank Pollock completed the four-run fourth with an RBI triple.
Duffy and Cerelli were also involved in both of USciences' other runs as Duffy led off the second with a single and after stealing back-to-back bases, he came home on a Cerelli sacrifice fly.
Duffy then kept the fourth inning alive with a two-out single and after stealing his third base of the contest, Cerelli drove him in with yet another RBI double.
Those two both finished 2-for-3 with Duffy scoring three runs and Cerelli driving in three.
Chris Anderson notably stole a base to move into 10th in program history with 24 for his career.
Nyack got on the board with two runs in the sixth before taking advantage of a leadoff error in the seventh to pull within three.
Game Two
Like Brown, Derk improved to 2-2 after surrendering just two hits, with six strikeouts and no walks, in his five innings of work. If not for errors or passed balls, no runner would've reached scoring position on him.
Darren Parker came on two work two hitless frames with two strikeouts against just one base on balls.
The offense did all of its damage in the second (four runs), third (seven) and fourth (three).
Parry joined Duffy in finishing with two hits and two RBI, while Pollock joined Duffy in scoring three times.
Cerelli and Vince Cammisa also scored twice, with Cerelli driving in a team-high three RBI to finish the day with six.
Cerelli, Parry and Pollock all tripled.
