Box Score 2 POMONA, N.Y. – The USciences baseball team made history in its final season on Monday, outscoring Dominican 21-3 over two games as it swept the Chargers for the first time in the program's Division II era.
Justin Derk earned his second complete-game win in three starts, throwing his first career shutout in a 9-0 game one, before the Devils exploded for 16 hits, including three home runs, en route to taking the nightcap 12-3.
Game two starter Ben Bradt matched Derk with a quality start, his third straight, while four Devils (Evan Sinclair, Frank Pollock, Nick Cerelli and Joe Duffy) scored four runs on the day.
Game One
Derk surrendered just four hits over his seven innings, striking out five and issuing zero walks as he worked four 1-2-3 frames while allowing multiple runners to reach in just once.
The senior improved to 4-3 on the year to move into a tie for sixth in the program's recorded single-season history (since 2005) in wins.
University of the Sciences scored all nine of its runs in its first two at-bats, with Eddie Parry driving in three of them. Hunter Parish followed his two-RBI double with a two-RBI single to cap a five-run second.
Parry was also one of four Devils to score twice, with Cerelli, Pollock and Sinclair also crossing home in both the first and second.
Adam Estrada led USciences with a 2-for-4 performance that included an RBI single in the four-run first.
Duffy notably walked to move into a tie for fifth in program history with 67 for his career, before drawing another base on balls in game two to move into sole possession of fifth. His 24 this year are tied for fourth in the program's single-season annals.
Game Two
Duffy led off the nightcap with a home run as University of the Sciences again led throughout. He was one of four Devils to reach base three times, scoring each time he did.
Pollock and Sinclair both had multiple RBI and runs, with Pollock recording his second career four-hit game and Sinclair hitting his sixth home run of the year. Pollock finished 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs, while Sinclair went 2-for-4 with the homer, four RBI and two runs.
He is now tied for second in the program's recorded single-season history in home runs along with Parish, who also hit his sixth in game two to move into a tie for fifth in program history with 10 for his career.
Estrada was the fourth Devil to reach three times, which included hitting a double, while Cerelli scored twice for the second game in a row.
Vince Cammisa doubled and AJ Pena added a base-knock as all nine Devils had a hit, with five recording at least two (Duffy, Pollock, Sinclair, Parry and Estrada).
Bradt gave up a lone earned run in the first of his six innings, scattering six hits with six strikeouts against two walks. If not for errors or passed balls, runners would not have reached scoring position in four of his six frames.
The sophomore's five wins this year are now tied for third in the program's recorded single-season history.
Eli Agostini notably pitched a scoreless seventh in his second career appearance.
