Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – Starting pitchers Justin Derk and Ben Bradt both went the distance as the USciences baseball team swept city-rival Jefferson, 3-2 and 10-3, for the first time since 2010 on Sunday at Richie Ashburn Field.
The two are now tied for the team-lead with three wins after limiting the Rams to just five runs over 16 innings.
Nick Cerelli had two hits in both games as he finished the day 4-for-8 with a double, three runs and three RBI, while Hunter Parish had the game-winning hit in the eighth inning of game one before homering in the nightcap.
Game One
Derk overcame a rain delay to go the distance as Jefferson scored its only two runs in the seventh, its first at-bat following the delay. He allowed just six hits, stranding runners in scoring position four times while working 1-2-3 frames in the first, fourth and eighth.
After Parish's eventual game-winning, two-out single in the eighth, Derk came out and worked around a one-out single to put a stamp on his first career complete-game victory.
The bottom of the eighth started with an Eddie Parry walk and Evan Sinclair single, but the next two outs were recorded prior to Parish coming through in the clutch.
Sinclair had a perfect game one, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice fly. The sacrifice fly was his 33rd RBI of the season, and he drove in another in the nightcap to end the day with 34, the program's new recorded single-season record (since 2005).
Cerelli also had two hits that led to the game's first two runs, leading off the fourth with a single before stealing second, advancing to third on a Parry grounder, and coming home on Sinclair's sacrifice fly. He then led off the sixth with a double and following a balk, it was a Parry sacrifice fly that scored him.
Game Two
USciences broke open a 1-0 game with a nine-run fifth that actually began with an out. 14 Devils in total went to the plate, with Cerelli recording two RBI singles and Joe Duffy also reaching twice. Parish highlighted the frame with a two-run homer, while Parry, Sinclair, Frank Pollock and Adam Estrada also drove in runs in an inning that featured seven hits.
Bradt kept Jefferson off the board until the sixth in what was his third quality start of the year. He scattered seven hits over a season-high seven innings to go the distance for the first time in his collegiate career.
Parish drove in three runs as it was his sacrifice fly that opened the scoring in the second.
Cerelli also drove in three as he finished 2-for-4, along with Pollock and Estrada.
Duffy reached base on all four his at-bats, recording his second three-hit game of the year to go along with a hit-by-pitch. He stole two bases to move into fourth in program history with 32 for his career, while his 60 walks are now ninth all-time
AJ Pena was the lone Devil to score twice.
