Hawks Seeded Sixth for Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship; Will Meet Saint Louis on Tuesday

5/21/2022 6:15:00 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team is seeded sixth for the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship, which will begin on Tuesday, May 24, at Davidson's Wilson Field.

The Hawks will take on third-seeded Saint Louis at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  The full bracket and schedule for the double-elimination tournament can be found here.

Saint Joseph's (28-23 overall, 12-11 Atlantic 10) secured its postseason berth after a three-game sweep of St. Bonaventure.  It is the second consecutive season that the Hawks have reached the A-10 Championship, which marks the first back-to-back conference postseason appearances since SJU played in the 1979 and 1980 East Coast Conference tournaments.

Saint Louis (28-22 overall, 14-9 Atlantic 10) locked up the third seed by virtue of taking two out of three from Dayton.  The Billikens and the Hawks met for a doubleheader on May 8, with SLU taking both games.  The third game of the series was canceled due to heavy rains that affected the Philadelphia region that weekend.

Tournament host Davidson (42-11 overall, 20-4 Atlantic 10) secured the top seed and a bye into Wednesday's second round of games.  The Wildcats took all three games in their visit to Hawk Hill last week.

VCU (36-18 overall, 19-5 Atlantic 10) is seeded second and will face seventh-seeded Richmond (26-24 overall, 11-13 Atlantic 10) on Tuesday night.  The Hawks dropped two of three at VCU in April, but have not met Richmond on the diamond since 2017.

Tuesday's first game will feature fourth-seeded Rhode Island (20-33 overall, 14-10 Atlantic 10) and fifth-seeded George Mason (22-31 overall, 13-11 Atlantic 10).  The Hawks and Rams did not meet this season, but SJU took two of three from Mason at Smithson Field last month.

Admission to the Championship is free of charge.  All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
