DALLAS – Saint Joseph's senior catcher
Andrew Cossetti was tabbed as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's District 1 Player of the Year, the organization announced on Friday afternoon.
A native of Eagleville, Pennsylvania, Cossetti earned his place as the top player in the district, which encompasses programs in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. He is the second Hawk to earn the honor after Kevin Kirkby was lauded in 2001.
Cossetti enjoyed a banner senior season in 2022, setting new single-season program records for home runs (19) and runs batted in (65), while his 61 runs scored gave him a share of the program's single-season mark in that category alongside classmate
Nate Thomas. He hit a career-best .327 while also leading the Hawks with a .714 slugging percentage. For his efforts, he was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team and secured a spot on the Buster Posey Award Watch List.
On March 11, Cossetti set a new program record for career home runs, eventually finishing the season with 43; prior to 2022, only one Hawk had ever reached the 30-home run plateau. He also smashed the program record for most consecutive games reaching base, reaching in 48 games dating back to 2021, and would go on to reach in 52 of 54 games on the season. Cossetti capped off his outstanding campaign by catching
Ian McCole's no-hitter at St. Bonaventure on May 19 and being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team for the second consecutive season.
