NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph's baseball head coach Fritz Hamburg was voted the Atlantic 10 Baseball Coach of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday morning.  In addition, junior outfielder Brett Callahan was named to the All-Conference First Team, while graduate student third baseman Nate Thomas, senior shortstop Luca Trigiani, junior pitcher Domenic Picone, and sophomore outfielder Ryan Cesarini were tabbed for the Second Team.

Freshman pitchers Ryan DeSanto and Will McCausland were joined by infielder Ryan Weingartner on the All-Rookie Team, while Callahan, Thomas, and Trigiani were joined by senior pitcher Peter Gallo on the All-Academic Team.

Hamburg received Coach of the Year laurels for the second time after previously claiming the award in 2014.  He led the Hawks to their first-ever Atlantic 10 regular season title and a dominant 20-5-1 record at Smithson Field in 2023.  His charges won seven of eight series in league play, including three sweeps, while finding success in all three facts of the game; the Hawks ranked at or near the top of the league in multiple major offensive categories, the pitching staff ranked third in the league in earned run average and second in batting average against, and the squad posted the league's second-highest fielding percentage during the regular season.

Callahan earned his second consecutive All-Conference nod after making the Second Team in 2022.  The lone Hawk to appear in every game this season, the Newark, Delaware, product reached base in 38 consecutive games at one point as the catalyst atop one of the league's most potent lineups.  SJU's leader in runs scored, home runs, and triples, he is also tied for the team lead in runs batted in while ranking in the top five in every major offensive category.  Callahan was previously named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on April 3.

Thomas is in the midst of a record-breaking binge during his final season on Hawk Hill; he broke the career record for walks earlier in the campaign before setting new all-time RBI and home run records over the final seven games of the season.  A native of Hockessin, Del., Thomas posted a 29-game on-base streak at one point and earned A-10 Player of the Week honors on March 20.  He is now a two-time All-Conference Second Team selection after earning similar honors a season ago.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Trigiani heated up once conference play began, hitting .377 with five home runs and posting a 1.158 OPS in conference play.  Tied for the team lead with a pair of four-hit games, nearly 70% of his RBI production came in league games.

Picone posted a 2.74 earned run average in league play that led all qualifying pitchers in the conference.  The Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, product ranked among the league leaders in ERA, wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, and batting average against.  Picone went at least six innings in six conference starts and tossed 19.0 consecutive scoreless innings between April 23 and May 14; he also notched a 1.38 ERA over his final five starts, all league wins for the Hawk.

The Atlantic 10 regular season batting champion, Cesarini started all but one game for the Hawks.  The Archbald, Pa., native currently ranks second in the league in slugging percentage and OPS while sitting fourth in on-base percentage; he also ranks in the top 10 in hits, doubles, and RBI.  Cesarini hit a blistering .443 in Atlantic 10 play to lead the league and was among the leaders in slugging, on-base percentage, OPS, hits, doubles, and RBI.  He has recorded 24 multi-hit games and driven in multiple runs on 16 occasions.

DeSanto leads all A-10 freshmen in strikeouts, both overall and in conference play.  The Frederick, Maryland, native made 13 appearances on the mound, with 10 of them starts, and held hitters to a .183 average, the best mark in the Atlantic 10.  DeSanto leads the Hawks in strikeouts while ranking second in ERA and third in innings pitched.  He was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week on March 8.

Hailing from Harleysville, Pa., McCausland was part of the weekend rotation right out of the gate and was the Hawks' Friday starter in conference play.  Ranking among the league leaders in innings pitched and strikeouts, McCausland went 4-1 in league play and posted a 3.42-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  He earned Rookie of the Week accolades on March 27.

A native of Berlin, New Jersey, Weingartner has appeared in 47 games, starting 45 of them, and ranks fourth on the team in batting average.  The team leader in stolen bases, he also sits tied for second on the squad in home runs and fourth on the team in runs scored.  Weingartner was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on March 20.

Gallo was one of five Hawks named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team on May 16.  Ranking fifth on the pitching staff in appearances out of the bullpen, the Asbury, N.J., native posted a 3-0 record and 13.71 strikeouts-per-nine during the regular season.

The Hawks received a first-round bye and will open Atlantic 10 Championship play later today against fourth-seeded Saint Louis.
